Cleaver and Young Nettle Smoothie

20240226 130521

Harness the power of foraged greens with this refreshing and healthy cleaver and young nettle smoothie. Packed with vitamins and minerals, this creamy blend is perfect as a light breakfast or a midday pick-me-up. The natural tang of yogurt complements the earthy, fresh flavor of the greens, creating a drink that’s as delicious as it is invigorating.

What Are Cleavers and Young Nettles?

  • Cleavers (Galium aparine): Also known as goosegrass, cleavers are wild greens with a mild, grassy flavor and a reputation for being detoxifying.
  • Young Nettles (Urtica dioica): Early spring nettles are tender and nutrient-rich, with a slightly nutty, spinach-like taste once blended.

Ingredients

  • 1 handful of cleavers (fresh, washed, and trimmed of stems)
  • 1 handful of young nettle leaves (fresh, washed, and destemmed)
  • 1 cup (250 ml) natural yogurt
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Optional: 1-2 tablespoons of honey or a squeeze of lemon juice for added flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Greens

Carefully wash the cleavers and nettles to remove any dirt or insects. Trim off any tough stems. Chop the greens roughly to make blending easier.

Step 2: Blend the Ingredients

In a blender, combine the cleavers, young nettles, and natural yogurt. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. If desired, include honey or lemon juice for a touch of sweetness or brightness.

Step 3: Blend Until Smooth

Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, add a splash of water or milk to reach your desired consistency.

Step 4: Serve

Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy immediately for the freshest flavor and maximum nutrition.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Super Nutritious: Cleavers and nettles are packed with vitamins A, C, and iron, making this a health-boosting drink.
  • Simple and Natural: With just a handful of ingredients, this smoothie highlights the goodness of wild edibles.
  • Customizable: Adjust the seasoning or sweetness to suit your palate.

Tips for Success

  • Handle Nettles Carefully: Use gloves when handling raw nettles to avoid stings. Blending neutralizes their sting entirely.
  • Pick Young Greens: Choose fresh cleavers and young nettles for the best flavor and texture.
  • Experiment with Additions: Try adding a banana, apple, or handful of oats for extra creaminess and sustenance.

Revitalize Your Day with a Foraged Smoothie
This cleaver and young nettle smoothie is a perfect way to connect with nature while nourishing your body. Light, refreshing, and brimming with wild goodness, it’s a drink that celebrates the bounty of the outdoors. 🌱✨
