Bake Your Day Brighter with Cherry Plum Muffins

Transform your morning routine or afternoon snack with these delightful Cherry Plum Muffins! Inspired by the classic blueberry muffin, these baked treats feature the unique tart-sweet flavor of cherry plums. Whether you’re using frozen or freshly chopped cherry plums, these muffins are sure to become a household favorite.

What Are Cherry Plums?

Cherry plums are small, round fruits that bridge the flavor gap between cherries and plums. Harvested in late summer or early autumn, they’re a forager’s treasure, often found on ornamental trees or in the wild. Their vibrant taste and ruby hue make them an irresistible addition to your baking adventures.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk
  • 1 1/2 cups (225 g) frozen cherry plums, lightly chopped (no need to thaw)
  • Optional: 1-2 tbsp coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or grease the cups generously.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3: Blend the Wet Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Add the milk, stirring until smooth.

Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the muffins light and fluffy.

Step 5: Add the Cherry Plums

Gently fold in the chopped cherry plums, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Step 6: Fill and Top

Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. If desired, sprinkle coarse sugar on top for a crunchy finish.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Why You’ll Love These Muffins

  • Unique Flavor: The tartness of cherry plums balances beautifully with the muffin’s sweetness.
  • Easy to Make: A simple recipe perfect for bakers of all skill levels.
  • Seasonal Fun: A fantastic way to enjoy frozen cherry plums any time of the year.

Tips for Success

  • Use frozen cherry plums directly from the freezer to prevent them from bleeding too much into the batter.
  • Lightly tossing the chopped plums in a tablespoon of flour can help them stay evenly distributed.
  • Don’t overbake; check for doneness as soon as the tops are golden.

Enjoy a Sweet Slice of Nature

These Cherry Plum Muffins are a celebration of nature’s bounty, turning a humble ingredient into a show-stopping treat. Perfect for brunches, picnics, or as a midday pick-me-up, they’re a testament to the magic of baking with seasonal fruits. Happy baking!
