Foraging activity for Quorn Beavers Colony

Fun and educational outdoor learning

8th May 2024

foraging with beaver colony 2

Event Details:

  • Duration: 60-75 minutes
  • Starting Point: Beavers Hut
  • Meeting Point: 99 Meeting Point

Safety Briefing and Plan:

Before embarking on our journey, we gathered at the Beavers Hut for a safety briefing. The kids were all ears as we explained the day’s plan. Excitement filled the air as we prepared the mushroom to grow and set off on our exploration!

Edible Plants Along the Way:

As we walked toward the brook, we pointed out various edible plants. Here are some highlights:

  1. Rose Bushes: We paused by the rose bushes, discussing foraging techniques and the importance of respecting private land. From a story, we learned about the many uses of rosebushes.
  2. Plantain: We spotted plantain leaves and discussed their medicinal properties. Some lucky participants even got to sample them!
  3. Thistles: tasted a sample and with some difficulty we managed to identify the edible Thistle.
  4. Hawthorn: Harvesting hawthorn flowers and young leaves was a highlight. We tasted their subtle flavors and discussed their traditional uses.
  5. Elder tree: At the elder tree, we checked on the mushroom growth and learn about the fairies and Celtic folklore stories.
  6. Wild garlic and Lords and Ladies – we learn how not confuse the two- lovely edible and poisonous plant.
  7. Cleavers: Armed with magnifying glasses, we examined cleavers’ tiny hooks.

Cleaver Tonic Refreshment:

Back at the hut, we enjoyed a refreshing cleaver tonic—a fitting end to our adventure-filled day!
